DOT physicals

DOT physical

For commercial drivers, the state of their physical health is essential for ensuring public safety. If you are planning on working as a trucker, bus driver, or other form of commercial vehicle, you’ll need to comply with the DOT physical requirement. At MedForce Mobile, we are happy to offer physicals to help get you on the road.

what is a DOT physical?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that everyone driving a commercial vehicle undergo a physical before obtaining their license. These physicals are designed to ensure that commercial drivers are in a safe physical, mental, and emotional state to do their jobs without endangering the public.

who needs a DOT physical?

Commercial vehicle drivers that fall under the following designations are required to complete a DOT physical:

  • Drivers of vehicles designed to carry more than 15 passengers

  • Drivers of vehicles carrying more than eight passengers

  • Drivers of vehicles carrying hazardous material

  • Drivers of vehicles carrying a gross weight of over 10,000 pounds – this includes weight rating, vehicle weight, or a combination of both

how does a DOT physical work?

DOT physicals are similar to those you would receive for school or other workplace requirements. Your physician will ask you questions about your medical history, including your history with tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs. The physical will also check your heart, lungs, and eyes. Depending on your requirements, you should expect a urinalysis and potentially a blood test.
